Today is World Cancer Day and we just want to remind you that mammograms save lives. We’ve discussed the importance of self-examination. Self-examinations, in addition to mammograms with experienced health care professionals, are essential to early cancer detection. The American College of Radiology, the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, all have issued guidelines for mammogram screening. Early detection reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer by 25-30% or more. The discomfort associated with mammograms is minimal for most women, however, the benefits associated with regular mammograms far outweigh the slight irritation.
